Note(s)George Sylvester (Red) Callender (1916-1992) was an American double bass and tuba player, as well as arranger and composer, active in New York, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. From the 1950s his work centered around commercial recording and television and film work. He participated in important bop recordings, and his repertoire included blues, swing, and symphonic works. In the late 1950s his efforts with Buddy Collette and others led to the successful amalgamation of the local operations of the musicians' union in Los Angeles.
