Note(s)Art Hodes (1904?-1993) was a pianist, broadcaster and writer who did much to popularize jazz in the 1940s through the 1980s. He performed with Joe Marsala, Mezz Mezzrow and Pee Wee Russell, among others. Hodes is noted for his efforts to bring jazz to a wider audience through publications and broadcasts, including his own record label, "Jazz Record," with Dale Curran, a jazz magazine of the same title, a weekly radio program for WNYC, and the television series, "Plain Ol' Blues" and "Jazz Alley." He was a frequent contributor to jazz periodicals, such as "Down Beat" and to newspapers, such as the "Chicago Tribune" and "The New York Times."
