Note(s)Jimmy Jones (1918-1982), an American jazz pianist, arranger, and composer best known as an accompanist, first garnered recognition in 1943 when he played, and then recorded, with Stuff Smith. Jones later performed with J. C. Heard, accompanied Sarah Vaughan, and recorded with many jazz leaders in the 1940s and 1950s, including Dicky Wells, Coleman Hawkins, Trummy Young, Sonny Stitt, Thad Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Ruby Braff, and Joe Turner. In the 1960s and 1970s, he focused on arranging and conducting, including pieces for Duke Ellington, and served as Ella Fitzgerald's music director.
