Note(s)Primarily a trombonist, Russell Big Chief Moore (1912-1983) was a member of the American Indian Pima tribe. Active from 1924 until his death, Moore played with such artists as Lionel Hampton, Oscar Celestin and Louis Armstrong. After Armstrong's band broke up, Moore became active in the Dixieland jazz world. Moore is believed to have last toured in 1981, traveling to England and playing with prominent jazz artist Keith Smith. As a bandleader, Moore recorded for the labels Vogue, Trutone and Jazz Art.
