Note(s)Frank RaÃ'l Grillo (1908?-1984), known as Machito, was a Cuban bandleader, singer, and maracas player. He toured with numerous groups in Cuba and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, including Maria Teresa Vera's El Sextet Occidente, Ignacio PiÃero's El Sexteto Nacional, La Estrella HabaÃera, El Septeto Anacaona, El Querteto Caney, and Las Estrellas Cubanas. His first recording as lead vocalist was with the orchestra of Noro Morales. In 1940, along with brother-in-law Mario BauzÃ¡, he formed the Afro-Cubans, an influential band in the development of salsa and the Afro-Cuban jazz style known as "cubop." During the 1950s and 1960s, the Afro-Cubans played regularly at the Palladium in New York City, made hundreds of recordings, and toured worldwide. Machito won a Grammy award in 1982 for his album "Machito and His Big Salsa Band" on the Timeless label.
