Note(s)'Slam' Stewart (1914-1987) was a jazz bass player whose trademark style was his ability to bow the bass and simultaneously hum or sing an octave apart. He was originally a violin player before switching to bass. Stewart found regular session work throughout the 1940s with Art Tatum, the Benny Goodman Sextet and other jazz greats. In May 1984 he received an honorary doctorate in music from SUNY, Binghamton, and in 1986 he was prominently featured in the public television special, Benny Goodman: Let's Dance.
