Note(s)Juan Tizol (1900-1984) played the valve trombone, and was also a composer and recording artist. He was born in San Juan Puerto Rico on Jan. 22, 1900. Tizol moved to the U.S. in 1920. His big break came in August of 1929 when he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He would remain with Duke for fifteen years, and became an integral part of the band's sound. In 1953 he retired from the rigors of touring. He stayed in Los Angeles, and dedicated himself to studio work. Juan Tizol died quietly at his home in Inglewood California, on Apr. 23,1984.
