Note(s)Beulah "Sippie" Wallace (nee Thomas) was born in 1898 and died in 1986. She grew up in Houston, Texas. Several members of her family were musicians, and she began performing at an early age. In 1923 she made her first recordings, singing in a blues style. In her later recordings King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and other important musicians accompanied her. From the mid-1930s her repertory was mainly gospel music, but in 1965 she began singing jazz and blues once more. In 1983 her album Sippie was nominated for a Grammy Award. Wallace composed most of her own songs, which are notable for the shapeliness and dignity of their melodies. Wallace died in 1986.
